About Brenda & Kelly

Brenda and Kelly have worked together for the last fifteen years. In addition to becoming great friends, they make a fantastic work team. They have years of experience sharpening their skills, learning tips and tricks, and developing the ability to meet the wants and needs of every parent and child. Additionally, they understand that haircuts can trigger fear for a young child. They have the patience and caring required to make all their clients comfortable and create a positive experience. In 2023, Brenda and Kelly ventured out on their own, with decades of combined experience, to create an industry dream team, and open their own private studio - My Tyke and I!

Brenda Hartfield

Co - Owner

Brenda Hartfield, a licensed cosmetologist with over 30 years of experience, spent the last 18 years managing a Chicagoland family salon. Skilled in styling hair for men, women, and clients of all ages, she has built lasting relationships with many who continue to seek her expertise. Brenda pursued cosmetology to fund her college education, where she met her husband, Jeff. Married in October 1990, they raised 6 children together and now enjoy the joy of ten grandchildren. Family is Brenda's priority, and she cherishes her time with them. This love for family inspired her to create My Tyke and I, a unique bonding experience for fathers and sons.

Kelly Schlick, has worked in a family centered salon since 2007, specializing in men & boys’ haircuts. Over the years, she has kept up with the most popular trends by attending training and conferences. Kelly grew up on a horse ranch and spent a lot of time working with children. She taught riding lessons, which helped her to develop patience with younger clients. The youngest of 4 siblings, her brothers are firefighters in their local towns & her sister works with an amusement park for kids. Because of having a son of her own, Kelly has become more aware of boys wanting a more “grown up” barber experience. Combining this understanding with her passion for working with children, Kelly hopes to bring a unique service to the community, through the My Tyke and I experience.

Where, when and how can you book an apointment?

We are located at, 555 E. Townline rd unit 22, suite 105. Our hours are weekdays from 10:00AM to 7:00PM & weekends from 10:00AM to 5:00PM, however we can work with your schedule upon request. To book an appointment please select "book an appointment" at the top of the webpage.

How often should I get my child’s haircut?

For boys, children's haircuts are typically recommended every 4 to 6 weeks to maintain their style. For girls with longer hair, a cut twice a year is usually sufficient, with one of those trims ideally scheduled after summer to address dry, damaged ends from swimming.

What age are kids when they first get their haircut?

It ultimately depends on personal preference. We've given haircuts as young as a few days old, but boys typically get their first haircut around age one. For girls, it's usually between ages two and three, though this can vary based on individual choice.

How often should I wash my child’s hair?

This can vary significantly based on individual hair type. Most children need their hair washed 2-4 times per week during colder seasons and daily in the summer if they’re swimming or using sunscreen.

My child hates haircuts. Can you still cut their hair?

Absolutely! It’s always up to the parents and how they want to approach their child’s haircut experience. We provide plenty of options, like our fun car chairs, or children can sit on a parent’s lap if they prefer. We’ve even had kids sit on the floor playing with toys during their haircut. We do everything we can to accommodate each child’s needs and make the experience enjoyable for everyone.

When talking to children about their appointment, it’s best to say they’re getting a “trim” rather than a “cut,” as the word "cut" might make them think of getting hurt. If they have a pacifier, comfort item, or favorite toy, we recommend bringing it along to help them feel more at ease in our suite.

You can also find plenty of positive videos on YouTube of kids getting their hair trimmed to show them what to expect. Additionally, there are many great books about getting a haircut that you can read together to prepare them.
